Lost the Cellphone Number on Your SRD Application? Here Is What to Do

When you applied for the SRD R370 grant, you gave SASSA a cellphone number. That number is now part of your record. SASSA uses it to send notifications, to verify your identity, and to confirm changes to your application.

If you no longer have access to that number, some things in your application stop working. This article tells you what still works, what does not, and how to fix it.

Why your cellphone number matters so much

The SRD application is not linked to your ID number alone. It is linked to your ID number and the cellphone number you gave at the start.

When SASSA needs to verify a change to your record, it sends a one-time PIN to that number. If the number is gone, the PIN goes nowhere. Changes cannot be confirmed. Payments can pause.

This is one of the most common reasons a payment stops without any clear explanation.

What still works without that number

Checking your application status does not require the original number. Your ID number is enough to see whether you are approved, declined, or pending for a given month.

You can still be approved and paid without accessing that number, as long as no changes are needed on your record. If your banking details, income situation, and ID record are all unchanged, the monthly approval can still go through.

What does not work

Any change to your record requires verification. That verification goes to the registered cellphone number.

If you need to change your banking details, update your income information, or correct anything on the application, SASSA will send a PIN to the old number. If you cannot receive that PIN, the change cannot go through.

Payments can also pause if SASSA’s system flags the number as inactive or reassigned to another person.

How to change your number officially

The only way to change the cellphone number on your SRD record is through SASSA’s official SRD application website. There is no other valid route.

On the site, look for the option to update your contact details. The process will ask you to verify your identity using your ID number and other information on your record.

If you cannot complete the online process, contact SASSA directly.

Do not visit a SASSA branch expecting staff to change the number on the spot. SRD is an online grant and branch staff are not always able to make changes to the SRD system directly.

Stay away from paid number-change services

Social media has many posts offering to change your SRD cellphone number for a fee. Some charge R50, some charge R200. None of them can actually do this.

Changing the number requires access to SASSA’s system and your personal ID verification. No third party has that access. What these services do instead is take your money and possibly your personal details.

Your personal details are valuable. An ID number and cellphone number together are enough to cause serious harm. Do not share them with anyone offering to fix your SRD record for payment.

How to follow your status while you wait for the change to go through

Once you have requested the number change, your application does not stop. It keeps running. You may see an approval for the current month while the change is still processing.

To monitor your status during this time, use this free status checker at MySRD. MySRD is an independent information website and is not connected to SASSA or government. It shows you the current result for your ID number on SASSA’s system.

Check it every few days. Once the number change is confirmed, your record will update.
